Though rose gardens are certainly not an uncommon component of such landscaped estates, Sonnenberg's rose garden's design of intersecting circles is indeed unusual; the curved beds and climbing bushes give a sense of informality that's much at odds with the norm. Most of the 2,500 bushes in the garden today - representing only pink, red and white cultivars, following the preferences of the lady of the house, Mary Clark Thompson - date to its 1971 restoration, the first of two, and were sourced from the renowned Jackson & Perkins Rose Gardens in Newark, New York. A second restoration occurred two years later, precipitated by the finding of the original blueprints used to construct it in 1905-06. At rear is the Belvedere, a majestic, Classically-styled columned pergola that separates the Rose Garden from the Italian Garden on the other side and affords visitors sweeping vistas of both.
