| Description |
English: The Rock Garden at Sonnenberg Gardens State Historic Park, as seen in August 2021. Set apart from the other gardens and features on five acres of relatively secluded woodland at the east end of the estate, Sonnenberg's Rock Garden is actually three interconnected gardens built between 1910 and '20; the Wild Garden, which the photographer is traversing, represents a sun-kissed alpine meadow planted with grasses and shrubs. The bridge passes over the central cascade of the Lily Garden, which leads to a man-made bog built of locally quarried limestone. These two features, along with the Rock Garden proper, were all created to mimic a specific environment or microclimate within the Scottish Highlands, long an influential landscape for garden designers. |
