Deutsch: Goethes Epigramm in der frühesten bekannten Form in einem Widmungsblatt vom 1. September 1805.
Der erste Zweizeiler übersetzt Plotin, Enneaden 1.6.9: οὐ γὰρ πώποτε εἶδεν ὀφθαλμὸς ἥλιον, ἡλιοειδὴς μὴ γεγενημένος. Plotin nimmt seinerseits Bezug auf Platon, Republik, 6.509a. Der zweite Zweizeiler ist Goethes Ausformulierung der Intention von Plotins Metapher, vermutlich in Anlehnung an eine ähnliche Stelle beim römischen Dichter Manilius.
