Description Native, warm-season, perennial, tufted grass up to 1 m tall. Leaves are up to 70 cm long and flat, with a prominent mid rib. Flowerheads are open panicles; 7-15 cm long, rust-brown/purple and with branches in a loose spiral around the stem. Spikelets are 6-8 mm long, 2-flowered, hairy and paired (lower sessile, awned and fertile; upper stalked, unawned and sterile). Terminal spikelets in triplets. Found in ungrazed or lightly grazed grassy woodlands and dry forests on a range of soil types. Commonly associated with kangaroo grass and barbed-wire grass in relatively undisturbed native pastures. Has moderate drought and low frost tolerance.
