Description

Everyone lives in a watershed! When we receive precipitation (rain or snow), it falls on the land and soaks in. What doesn't soak in makes its way into larger bodies of water such as a wetland, pond, lake, creek, stream or river. The area of land that catches the water is called a WATERSHED.

There are 14 major rivers running through South Dakota; that means there are also 14 major watersheds covering the state.

The biggest watershed covering South Dakota is the MIssouri River Watershed. Almost all of South Dakota lies in the Missouri River Watershed which is part of the much larger Mississippi River watershed. Many smaller watersheds fit inside the Missouri River Watershed.

Which watershed do you live in?

Which major South Dakota watershed does not drain into the Missouri River?
