DescriptionSouthampton Flying Boat Terminal and railway station (site), Hampshire (geograph 5262893).jpg |
English: Southampton Flying Boat Terminal and railway station (site), Hampshire This station at Berth 50 was opened in 1948 by British Railways and closed in 1958 when flying boat operations ceased. See SU4210 : Seaplane Terminal Southampton Docks for how it used to look. View north east from a passing ferry. The brick pontoons in the foreground supported a pier to which the flying boats were moored. On the quayside behind was the terminal building and station platforms, at which the boat trains arrived and departed. The tug is the Calshot, built in 1930 and featured prominently in the 1952 British Transport Films production "Ocean Terminal" |
