English: Southern Fort, Berry Head The ruins of the magazine and the guardhouse within the southern and smaller of the two forts built between 1795 and 1805. The magazine, on the left, is surrounded by a blast wall, and is itself lined with brick within the limestone. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1195203
I once saw an open air production of Macbeth here. It was freezing, it rained, there was a noisy Bank Holiday firework display at a nearby holiday park, and in the middle of the performance cries of "help" could be heard. Shortly afterwards emergency vehicles arrived onstage, and a stranded windsurfer was rescued from the foot of the adjacent cliffs. Meanwhile the character of the porter browsed the audience's picnics and scoffed their wine. |
