Description

Martin Schongauer (around 1440/1445 Colmar to 1491 Breisach or Colmar). Saint Anthony tormented by demons, around 1470/75. Copper engraving. The large-format engraving shows the hermit Antonius, who was called from the miracle worker and patron of the sick. According to legend, he is tormented by a bevy of monsters and lifted high into the air. The sensational mischiefs are detailed and ingeniously designed. They clearly show the close observation of animals and fish. The popular picture theme was widespread in the late Middle Ages and Schongauer's sheet was widely received.

Deutsch: Martin Schongauer (um 1440/1445 Colmar bis 1491 Breisach oder Colmar). Der heilige Antonius von Dämonen gepeinigt, um 1470/75. Kupferstich.
