Summary edit

Description
English: Spacing of rails in South Australian Railways triple gauge track – left to right: 1067, 1435 and 1600 mm (3'-6", 4'-81/2" and 5'-3") at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide. All three share a common rail, out of photo on the left. Before mechanical hammers became available, the narrow gap between the bases of the rails – about 40 mm (11/2 in) – called for exceptional skill when driving in railspikes.
