Description
English: Veterans One-Stop Center, 1280 Main Street at Bryant Street, Buffalo, New York, July 2020. A good representative of the so-called "stripped Classical" architecture common in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings of its era (built in 1914 to a design by the local firm of Colson & Hudson), this three-story office building features a stone-clad ground floor wherein the windows are framed by paired Doric pilaster strips and the entrance is crowned by a miniature balconet; the upper floors are of brick and more austerely ornamented, but are crowned by a bracketed cornice with a dentil row beneath. For the first three decades or so of its history, the building served as the offices of the Foster-Milburn Company, a manufacturer of patent medicines founded in Toronto in 1860 by Orrin Foster and Thomas Milburn which moved its headquarters to Buffalo about ten years later. It was sometime during or immediately after World War II when Foster-Milburn consolidated its operations at its Upper West Side manufacturing facility and sold its Main Street premises to the Colonial Radio Company for their use in manufacturing radio and television sets; however, Colonial's tenure there was quite brief, and the building was divided into suites and spent the 1950s and '60s serving as home to various different firms, most notably the local offices of Otis Elevator. Today, the building is owned by Spectrum Human Services who provides health care and other services to active and retired service members and their families through their Veterans One-Stop program.
