Description

Spider web in Ohio, USA. (September 2010) (photo by Mary Ellen St. John)

This is a stereotypical spider web. Not all spider make webs, and not all webs have the appearance of this example. The concentrically-structured circular web seen here was made by an orb weaver spider.

Spider silk is composed of protein and is exuded from the posterior end of the spider's abdomen. Modified appendages called spinnerets handle the extruded silk.

Spiders use silk to catch and wrap prey, to attract mates (by vibrating a silk web), and for protecting eggs.

Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Arachnida
