Description The Spiny Butterfly Ray is found in the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean. In the western Atlantic it occurs from southern New England to Brazil. The spiny butterfly ray is harmless to humans as it is not aggressive but if stepped on, it will utilize its spine as a defense. Among the ditinguishing features of this ray are a short tail armed with a spine. The disk is very broad. It has very low dorsal and ventral finfolds on its tail. The disk is dark brown to grayish, lower surface of disc and of pelvic fins is white, brownish, rosy or rusty cast. The tail of the Spiny Butterfly Ray is white or rosy white.
