Summary edit

Description
English: Spoor's Hotel, 10768 Main Street at Salt Road, Clarence, New York, October 2020. One of the oldest and most historic buildings in Clarence (its exact age is not known, but the estimate of 1810 cited on the signage on the front of the building seems reasonable if not a bit conservative), Spoor's Hotel served during its early years as a roadside tavern and way station, a stagecoach stop, and - during the War of 1812 - a shelter for those who were driven out by the British Army's invasion and burning of Buffalo. Local lore alleges that no fewer than three U.S. Presidents - Millard Fillmore, Grover Cleveland, and James Monroe - slept here. After the death of original owner William Spoor (1769-1828), the establishment continued in existence under various alternate names, including the Sadler House, the Stone Jug, and the West Shore House (the latter referring to the railroad whose tracks once ran just behind the building). Now a designated town historic landmark, Spoor's Hotel is also an excellent example of Federal architecture, with a scrupulously symmetrical façade in rustic limestone, a recessed front entrance framed by sidelights, and a shallow-pitched roof whose side gables are flanked by stepped raking parapets pierced by twin chimneys.
