FROM GREAT SLAVE LAKE EASTWARDS 35 granite, and is massive, the beds dipping south at an angleof 60 degrees. It varies in character, quartz being verymuch in the ascendant in some places, biotite in others.The portage is about 2^ miles in length, but the going isexcellent, hard and dry. At the end of the portage achange in the formation is at once apparent. The olderplutonic rock is replaced by white sandstone, which latterformation is then continuous, with occasional breaks, tothe mouth of the main river. At this time of the year the shores of the river arethickly covered with the hair of the deer, which they shedas they swim across. A little above the junction with the main river there isa fine fall about thirty feet in height. The general character of the western branch of theArk-i-llnik is very similar to that of many rivers in Scot-land. The water is swift and heavy in some places; inothers swift and shoal, with a few stretches of quiet water.The lakes very much resemble Scotch l
