In 1859, Starke wonthe Goodwood Stakes, and in 1861 theGoodwood Cup and the Brighton Stakes.In the same year Optimist won the AscotStakes. Umpire won the Nursery Stakesat Goodwood, and was close up in thebetting with Wizard and Thormanby forthe Derby of 1860. Mr. Lorillards greatest hope of successon the English turf was the Duke of Ma-genta, purchased from his brother at whatwas then considered a great price. Parole, who was afive-year-old in 1878, had been shipped toEngland to lead the Duke of Magenta inhis work. It was supposed that his bestdays were over, and there was little thoughtof winning races with him. On the con-trary, he ran very well indeed. He wonthe Newmarket Handicap, carrying 116pounds, beating the great Isonomy, thena four-year-old, with 124 pounds up, andfollowed this by winning the City andSuburban, the Great Metropolitan, theGreat Cheshire Handicap, and the EpsomGold Cup. The following year he won theLiverpool Cup, but was disqualified on theground of a cross. After that he was soharshly handicapped that he could not win,and was sent back to America to win manyraces on his native heath.
