Farms in Niagara are said to grow thousands of acres of peaches, grapes, plums, pears, cherries, apples, strawberries and raspberries. In addition to fruit, vegetables such as corn, peppers, tomatoes and others are also grown. There are several harvest times during the year. Most notable are strawberries in June, cherries in July, peaches in August and grapes in September. However, in early spring there is another kind of crop that is harvested in Niagara. Similar to the gathering of hay in late summer and fall, early spring is time to roll up the snow fences. The bales of snow fences often lay in the fields for a few weeks before being hauled away, only to be brought back out in late autumn to protect the roads adjacent to open field from being blocked with snow drifts. Here's it an early (actually late this year) and bountiful harvest! |
