| Description |
This former RAF airfield is located in the East of Scotland. Flying stopped there after WW2 and the station was closed. For a time it was a motor racing circuit but in 1960 it became a US Navy base equipped with various radio aerials and a huge circular array which was used to pinpoint radio transmissions from thousands of miles away - and in particular transmissions from Soviet submarines. It was more than 400 feet across. There's Info on those installations here: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/FRD-10" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/FRD-10</a> The base became like a small US town with American personnel, shops and vehicles. Outside the local area the base was little known and it was simply referred to as a communication base. This continued, in relative secrecy, until 1997 when the need for the base was finished and the US personnel went home or were re-deployed. In my picture, taken from some miles away, you can see the circular footprint of the circular aerial at the intersection of the old runways. The US Air Force has a similar installation at RAF Chicksands in Bedfordshire, until 1996. |
