Description

Achaemenid period (ca. 550 - 330 BCE).

The description of this object reads "Square Stone with 12 Petals [sic] Flower." I noticed that this flower motif seems to appear everywhere in Persepolis as a decorative border enclosing bas-relief sculptures.

I wish I knew more about the motif, for example, whether the Achaemenids invested it with any special significance, or whether it was selected simply because it's pretty and, presumably, relatively easy to carve.

In the museum at Persepolis, Iran.
