English: Squint (hagioscope) in the Church of England parish church of All Saints, Shorthampton. Squints are sometimes said to be for lepers to see the altar from, lepers being segregated from the rest of the church. This is sometimes the case, but leper squints are often found on exterior walls too. However, Shorthampton has a rather small chancel arch so this squint may have been made to allow more of the congregation in the nave to see the main altar. |
