Summary
editDescriptionSsangyong Chairman H - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
Ssangyong is one of the smaller automotive manufacturers in South Korea, primarily specializing in light trucks. Its only passenger car is this luxury model, the Chairman. Until the introduction of the Hyundai Genesis, the Chairman was South Korea's only rear-wheel-drive luxury car. The H is the original Chairman before the 2008 redesign, and remains in production alongside the redesigned version, Chairman W. The H's powertrain and chassis are more or less that of the 1980s Mercedes-Benz E-class, chassis code W124. And its styling is somewhat Mercedes-Benz too. Ssangyong has had a long relationship with Mercedes-Benz, and uses many Mercedes-Benz components in its vehicles. The W, by comparison, is an all-new unique design. The Unification Church and North Korea operate a joint venture in Nampo, called Pyeonghwa Motors. Its luxury car, the Zunma, is indeed a license-produced Chairman H. The desirability of Mercedes-Benz is one of the few things the Communists of North Korea and the McCarthyists of South Korea can agree on, and the Chairman finds a niche catering to that. |
