Summary edit

Description St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 81 Christopher Street between Bleecker Street and Seventh Avenue South in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was built in 1821-22 in a modified Federal style as the Eighth Presbyterian Church, making it the sixth oldest extant place of worship in Manhattan. In the late 1790s, the site had been the location of Hartwick Seminary, the fist Lutheran seminary in the United States. In 1842 the Presbyterian congregation left, turning the church over to St. Matthew's Protestant Episcopal Church, which used it until 1858, when the German Lutheran congregation took over. Some of the church's Victorian ornamentation was added in 1886 by Berg & Clark. (Sources: From Abyssinian to Zion and historical plaques on the church)
