Summary edit

Description
English: St. Josaphat Roman Catholic Church, 20 Peoria Avenue at William Street, Cheektowaga, New York, November 2020. Completed in 1952, this ruddy brick edifice ably represents the simplified Late Gothic Revival style popular in ecclesiastical architecture in Western New York at the time: the façade is dominated by a large central stained glass window and front entrance that are both recessed and placed within compound arches, Gothic and segmental respectively, whilst parapet walls rise at the roofline of both the front and side gables. The belfry atop the campanile at the rear of the building continues the pattern of stepped recesses. St. Josaphat owes its existence to the continued growth and out-migration of Buffalo's Polish-American community, which by the first decade of the 20th century had surpassed the city line to establish homes in what's now the Doyle area of suburban Cheektowaga; Bishop Charles Colton founded the parish in 1905 and appointed Father Andrew Garstka as its first pastor. A combination church/school building, erected in 1907 and rebuilt following a 1924 fire, was soon enough superseded by the present structure.
