| Description | This church building was originally constructed in 1847, and was dedicated in 1848, during the Mexican American War, and was home to St. Michael the Archangel Church for 150 years. Located at the head of Church Street along St Michael Street in Cincinnati's Lower Price Hill neighborhood, the building was renovated extensively in 1947, with the current entryway and shorter, simplified steeple erected at this time to replace the originals, possibly due to fire damage. Today, the church is the second-oldest remaining former Catholic Parish Church in the city, and has been converted into The Sanctuary, an event and community center that is a part of the ongoing work to revitalize and strengthen the Lower Price Hill neighborhood. Adjoining buildings, including the former school, rectory, and annexes have been renovated using New Market and Historic Preservation tax credits by the organization Education Matters, whom use the school as an adult education center to serve the low-income residents of the neighborhood, as well as Community Matters, a branch of the organization that focuses on the greater community. |
