Description
English: St Andrew's church - reredos by Sir Ninian Comper. Panel depicting Edmund, King of East Anglia, with a wolf at his feet. St Andrew's church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933385 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933392 has a round tower of Saxon workmanship > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933375 - the octagonal bellstage is a 14th century addition - and a south and north transept dating from the 14th century also. The church and surrounding churchyard are hemmed in by a wall and tall trees from all sides and hence difficult to photograph. Extensively restored in Victorian times, the probably most notable feature of St Andrew's is the stained glass > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933423 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933421 by William Wailes, dating from the mid-19th century. The chancel is the work of Sir Ninian Comper, who also designed the alabaster reredos - for a wider view see > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933397. Remains of an old stone tomb > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933409 can be seen on the chancel north wall; it is believed to have been constructed from parts of several different tombs, with the lower part having come from the tomb of Thomas Buttes, d. 1592. The ledger slab seen on the floor in front is to members of the Bacon family. The C20 rood screen below the south transept arch > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933412 - its panels are painted with a sequence of saints > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933416 - was erected in the memory of the fallen in WWI. The font > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/933431 is Victorian and its cover dates from the 20th century but the surrounding floor tiles are C14.
