Description
English: St Botolph, Westwick, Norfolk - 19th century wall monument to a member of the Petre/Burney family. Initials below "JP", "KP". History of the Burney family of Westwick (Per: Francis Blomefield, 'Tunstede Hundred: Westwick', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 11 (London, 1810), pp. 80-82. [1]) Sir Richard Berney, Bart. of Reedham, purchased the lordship of Bromholm and Westwick, and left them to a younger son, John Berney, Esq. who married Susan, daughter of John Staines of Weston, by whom he had John his son and heir. John his son was lord in 1690, and married Bridget, daughter of William Branthwayt Hethel, and to his 2d wife in 1720,—, daughter of Maurice Kendal, Esq. of New Bukenham. Mrs. Berney widow, possessed it in 1762. In 1782 Westwick Hall was the seat of JOHN BERNEY PETRE ESQ, as inscribed below an engraving of the house in that yearBerney-Petre--Esq-8981373.html. Norfolk Record Office, MC 324 PETRE OF WESTWICK (ADDITIONAL DEPOSIT) Title deeds, Estate papers and Family papers[2]: Westwick Hall came into the Petre family on the marriage of William Petre (d.1772) to Elizabeth Berney, a daughter and co-heiress of John Berney of Westwick Hall. William's son, John Berney Petre (1741-1819) died unmarried and the estate was inherited by his nephew, Jack Varlo (1773-1854), an army captain, who changed his name to Petre (later Colonel John Varlo Petre). Colonel John Varlo Petre (1773-1854) married Hon. Catherine Harbord (1773-1857), a daughter of Harbord Harbord, 1st Baron Suffield (1734-1810). His son, John Berney Petre (1805-1882) had no issue and Westwick Hall was passed to his niece, Mary Laura Duff (nee Dawkins) and then to her son, Captain Bernard James Duff. Both mother and son changed their names to Petre in 1882. Other Burney monuments in the same church:

  • In memory of Bridget, the late pious, &c. wife of John Berney, Esq. 3d daughter of William Branthwayt of Hethel, Esq. she died July 7, 1711.
  • Here resteth the body of John Berney, Esq of Westwick, son of Sir Richard Berney, Bt. of Reedham, who departed, &c. March 31, 1689, leaving two sons John and Richard.
  • In memory of Susan Berney, widow of John Berney, Esq. and daughter of John Staines of Weston, Gent. she departed, &c. March 2, 1692, leaving two sons John and Richard.

  • 2: Gules, a chevron between three garbs argent
  • 3: Gules, a bend or between two escallops argent (Petre) quartering Berney, impaling Quarterly azure and gules, an imperial crown or between four lions rampant argent (Harbord). Arms of Colonel John Varlo Petre (1773-1854) who married Hon. Catherine Harbord (1773-1857), a daughter of Harbord Harbord, 1st Baron Suffield;
  • 4: Gules, a chevron between three eagles displayed argent
  • 5: Argent, on a canton gules a cross or
