Description Royal arms of King William III of England. "WR" (Willielmus Rex). With inescutcheon of Nassau. The arms are seemingly incorrectly depicted as they show in the 1st and 4th quarters respectively France and England alone. Usually his arms show these two quarters containing the arms of France quartering Plantagenet (England) (with France in position of greatest honour as in feudal terms the king of France was greater than the king of England, standard depiction). This depiction however relegates the arms of Plantagenet (England) to a very inferior level, the 4th quarter, below those of Scotland and Ireland, which surely cannot have been intended. The arms of Plantagenet (England) usually appear in the first quarter of greatest honour, albeit quartered by France, and again in the 4th, in standard depictions of the arms of King William III.
