Description

Showing the font of 1853, carved by Robert Mawer. It was photographed where it lies in storage, separated into its three pieces (bowl and two pedestal sections) in a narrow passage of the crypt, among pieces of masonry. The font was painted in 1853, with colours in a thin wash. In recent years the sculpture has been obscured with at least two layers of gloss paint. The font was photographed using two bright torches or flashlights, and no camera flash. Showing St Thomas cross with crown of thorns symbolism.

This is the crypt of the former Church of St Mark, Woodhouse, Leeds, West Yorkshire. The church was designed by Peter Atkinson and Richard Hey Sharp. The foundation stone was laid on 23 April 1823, it was completed in 1825, and was consecrated on 13 January 1826. Architect Cuthbert Brodrick did some reordering work in 1853, and may have designed the font in broad outline, but the detail of the carved design is Robert Mawer's work. The church closed in 2001 due to dwindling congregation, and was purchased in 2008 by Gateway Church, who reopened it on 5 June 2014.
