Summary edit

Description
English: St Mary's Church, Reigate North east corner of the church, showing the east end of the chancel (extedned in the 14th/15th century) and the 1513 two storey vestry, the first floor of which houses the Cranston Library. This was the first public library in England, founded in 1701 by the Rev Andrew Cranston, who was Vicar from 1697 until his death in 1708. There are over 2400 volumes, many of which were Andrew Cranston's own books or ones donated by wealthy parishioners at the time, with others donated subsequently. Most of the books are leather bound and many are inscribed with the donor's details. It is now adminstered by trustees, some of whom are appointed by the PCC of St Mary's, thus maintaining the church link.
