Description

1914 postcard photo of St Mary's Church, Preston Park, Brighton, Sussex, England. It is a Roman Catholic church, and was built between 1910 and 1912 of Kentish rag stone with Bath stone dressing, and a Cornish slate roof. The card carries a note: "Erected by Messrs H. Packham, Sons & Palmer, 2 South Road, Preston.

Notes of interest
  • One of the men in the gateway wears a boater and carries plans: presumably the architect. The man next to him in cap and suit may be the foreman. Clothes indicated rank within professions at that time.
  • Building workers are posed on the scaffolding.
  • The horse and cart are obviously posed at the entrance, perhaps to show the builder's transport.
Date Postmarked 29 November 1914, but probably photographed 1910-1912
