Description
English: South Transept Window of St Michael church and All Angels in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England. This window ("Answers to Prayer") was designed by Edward Burne-Jones in 1863. The window was made in the William Morris workshop (Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.). The angels in the upper tracery are by D. G. Rossetti; the patterns are by Philip Webb; and William Morris chose the colours and put together the final design. The four lights are inspired by 'prayer' in the context of - from left to right - the Battle of Ajalon (Joshua 10), Elijah on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7) and St. Peter's escape from prison (Acts 12). It is thought that the bearded man being grabbed by the scruff of his collar in the lower left window may be a depiction of William Morris.
