Description
English: Church of St Nicholas, Bracon Ash, Norfolk, ledger stone of Matther Weld (1567-1650) inscribed in Latin: M(emoriae) S(acrum) depositum Mathae Weld Generosi qui plenus annorum obiit sexto Jannarii Anno Christi 1650 cum vixisset ann(os) 83 mens(es) 6 septiman(us) un ? Gascoignus Weld filius unicus bene merenti gemens posuit (Placed sacred to the memory of Mathew Weld, Gentleman, who full of years died on the 6th of January in the year of Christ 1650 when he had lived 83 years 6 months 7 (days). Gascoign Weld his only son placed it sighing to one well deserving"). Arms of Weld: Azure, a fesse nebuly between three crescents ermine (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1088 "Weld of Eaton, Cheshire, descended from William Weld, Sheriff of London in 1352"). Below: Rutter Gules, a lion passant in chief and three garbs in base or (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.882 "Rutter of Cheshire, etc") impaling Weld. St Nicholas' church > 1393135 - 1393146 - 1393157 stands on the site of a much older church. The nave and baptismal font > 1393159 date from the 14th, the chancel from the 15th century. An early 19th century drawing by Robert Ladbrooke (author of ' Views of the Churches of Norfolk') depicts the church with a tower or turret which housed the bell. It was taken down for safety reasons and the church now is without, with the bell hanging in a frame > 1393143 placed at the south-west corner of the nave. The Berney mausoleum > 1393133 was added onto the chancel north wall during the 18th century. The entrance > 1393154 to the mausoleum is through the doorway of an older mausoleum (dating from the 16th century) within the church and unusually, it is neither sealed off nor locked but wide open > 1393155. The church is open every day.
