Description
English: St Peter's church, High Street, Marlborough - west turret. This turret, in contrast to the other three, has a distinct curve to its sides. The reason is this. During the English Civil War, Marlborough was on the Parliamentarian side unlike most of the surrounding area. Royalist forces expressed their concern at this by shooting off the original turret. After hostilities ceased the church authorities engaged a contractor to restore the turret. After getting so far with the work he realised that, if he continued, the turret would be half as high again as its fellows. He compensated accordingly and achieved the objective of attaining the same height but leaving the legacy of the slightly bowed appearance.
