Description

Mural monument of Dame Susan Millicent Staveley (d.1918), née Minet, widow of General Sir Charles William Dunbar Staveley (1817-1896) GCB, of Capel-le-Ferne in Kent (see his mural monument in St Mary's Church, Capel-le-Ferne). She was a daughter of Charles William Minet of Baldwyns, in the parish of Dartford, Kent. They had five sons: William, Charles, Henry, Arthur and Cecil, a vice admiral. Cecil's son Sir William Staveley became an Admiral of the Fleet. They also had three daughters: Rose, Leila and Susan. Dame Susan Millicent Staveley established Capel-le-Ferne Primary School in Kent ("the endowment of the educational foundation known as Capel-le-Ferne Primary School in the County of Kent (“the foundation”), comprised in a Deed dated 18th November 1911 and made between (1) Dame Susan Millicent Staveley and (2) The Most Honorable John Charles Marquis Camden and others and (3) The Reverend Alfred Robert Jackman and the Churchwardens of the Church of Capel-le-Ferne" [1]). Arms: Argent, on a chevron between three lozenges azure as many buck's heads cabossed or (Staveley) (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.714, but with buck's heads argent "Staveley of East Buckland, Devon") impaling Argent, in base on the sea proper three persons in military costume seated in an open boat rowed by two sailors all proper in fess three ermine spots on a chief or a mount vert thereon an oak tree proper fructed or (Minett, per Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.690).

Isaac Minet (1660 - 1745) was a Huguenot refugee who settled in England. His descendant Isaac MINET II acquired the manor house of BALDWYNS - probably about 1810. His four children were born between the years 1803 - 1807 and their registrations of birth showed an address of 13 Austin Friars in the City of London. Isaac Minet II became High Sheriff of Kent in 1827 and died at Baldwyns on 14th March 1839 aged 72 years being buried at Westerham some 8 days later.
