Description

St Peter's Church, Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. Showing label stop head on gallery in nave. Note that all of these heads have some some indication of movement, even if it is only in the direction of the eyes. The sculptor has created a man-animal face by simply extending the nose down to the lip, and substituting alf's ears for human ears.

Note: Leeds sculptors Mawer, Ingle etc. carved a lion drain pipe gargoyle on St Paul's, Manningham, Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1846. They worked on Cuthbert Brodrick's restoration of St Peter's in 1859, and here we see this similar construction used as a label stop, although it is a man-animal and not a lion. Later, in about 1866 on the Britannia Buildings next door to the home of two of the Victorian sculptors (Catherine Mawer and her son Charles), another lion drain pipe gargoyle was carved. Therefore it would be surprising if the same group had not carved this. They had experience of imitating Romanesque art, and they kept the pieces of an original Celtic cross in their yard until 1867.
