Description

A funeral hatchment on the north wall of the nave in Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Church in the parish of Honing, Norfolk, England. For Thomas Cubitt (1759-1829) of Honing Hall, which estate was purchased in 1683 by his ancestor Benjamin Cubitt. Thomas Cubitt married Catharine Spencer (1761-1839), of Dulwich in Surrey. (Source: http://www.thepeerage.com/p55634.htm). Thomas Cubitt was for "forty-five years eminently distinguished as a zealous magistrate for this county (i.e. Norfolk)". Arms: Sable, a string bow full bent in pale an arrow in fesse point to the dexter argent (Cubitt) impaling Quarterly argent and gules, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters a fret or over all on a bend sable three escallops of the first (Spencer (as Earl Spencer)). With crest of Cubitt: An arm in armour embowed proper, garnished or, grasping an arrow gules, tipped and feathered argent.

See also mural monument on the North Side of the East End for his 5th son Edward George Cubitt (1793-1863), Esq., who served in H.M. 4th Dragoons during a great paxt of the Peninsular war, was in the retreat from Burgos, present at the battles of Vittoria, Pampeluna, and Toulouse, and entered Paris with the allied army of occupation in 1816. He died on December 20th, 1863, aged 70.
