Description
English: Russia stampless folded letter to Nice, France, 'St. PETERSBURG DEN 9 IUN. 1851.' TA3' handstamp, 5 LUG transit. Letter sent by steamboat over Stettin.

Details:

  • June 9, 1851 (Julian) paid letter posted by 'Witt & Co. St. Petersburg' (blue, oval handstamp at left). Sender wrote 'Frco' at bottom left. Not restated at post office. The postmark 'St. PETERSBURG DEN 9 IUN. 1851' was applied.
Dobin: 1.02 type 3.06. Reception expedition of foreign correspondence, used 1844-1853, Rarity 4.[1]

  • Letter was sent on sender's wish by steamboat over Stettin, see manuscript 'Dampfschiff via Stettin'. Just outside St. Petersburg the letter was collected at Kronstadt and shipped by either the steamboat 'Preussische Adler' or 'Wladimir' to Stettin.[2]. This journey took about 65-70 hours.[3].
  • Letters to southern France (Nice) were routed via Austria and Northern Italy. Italian red '5 LUG' handstamp applied, indicating receipt date of July 5 (July=luglio).
  • A transit 'TA3', handstamp was applied in Milan or Turin (then Austria) on mail to Nice. This was short for "Transit Autrichien". T.A.3. refers to the "third price" which is the rate for mail to Sardinia from a number of specific countries including Russia. There were also similar T.A.1. to T.A.5. marks for mail from other countries, indicating the first - fifth rate.
