Summary edit
DescriptionSt Thomas the Martyr, Bristol (2752721878).jpg |
Taken from Redcliffe Quay, looking east. It looks omninously as if St Thomas will soon no longer be visible form that point (written in August 2009). The church was a chapelry of Bedminster. The martyr referred to is St Thomas a Becket who was murdered in Cantebury Cathedral in 1170. The first church on the site was built soon after the murder. In its present form it was completed in 1793 though the Perpendicular north west tower is mostly original. The interior of the church is Georgian. The combination of high barrel vault ceiling and high windows with painted plastered walls make for a light and airy interior. Although it survived the bombings that devasted much of Bristol during WWII, no vicar was appointed when the incumbent retired in the late 1940's. It struggled on for a few years but closed after the last service was held there at Christmas 1982. The church is now administered by the Churches Conservation Trust.
