Description

The west window of Canterbury Cathedral may have been commissioned by Richard II (reigned from 1377-1399). Certainly at the top of the windows are his personal arms made up of the arms of Edward the Confessor and those of France and England. On the left of the window are the arms of his young wife, Queen Isabella of France whom he married when she was 6 years old in 1396. On the right are the arms of his first wife Anne of Bohemia. The window is also associated with Prior Chillenden (1391-1411). The window was probably made for Richard after 1396. The style of the glass is similar to Master Thomas of Oxford, England's most famous glass painter. It is also similar to glass in York Minster which is associated with John Burgh.

The window depicts a series of English kings in the top portion, these include King Canute, William I, Edward the Confessor and Henry I. These date from the 14th century. Below these are various Dukes, Archbishops and Saints, mostly from the 15th century. The bottom row of this seven light window shows various old Testament characters including the famous image of Adam digging which is said to date from 1178.It is one of the best preserved pieces of medieval stained-glass in England and was executed by the so-called "Methusalah Master".

The tracery is filled with images of Saints and Prophets, with the Royal Coat of Arms at the top.
