Description

Stamp of the (British) Protectorate of South Arabia - Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Mukalla in Hadramaut; 1967; commemorative stamp of the issue "Paintings"; issue of 5 stamps + 2 airmails + 1 block; The depicted stamp motive showsh the painting "Master Hare" by Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).; Meant is the depicted child what is a portrait of Francis George Hare in 1788/1789 (= the oldest son of Francis Hare Naylor (1753-1815)).; Joshua Reynolds was from 1784 onwards "Court Painter of the King" of George III as King of the United Kingdom.; This painting is contemporary located in the Louvre in Paris (France).; This painting was created in 1788-1789 in the style of the Genre-paintery of the 18th century (portrait paintery).; Reynolds blinded totally in 1789 and gave up the paintery in that year.; In the upper right corner is depicted a monochromized portrait of the then former head of state Sultan Ghalib II bin Awadh bin Saleh Al Qu'aiti.; He was the official ruler of the sultanate "Shihr & Mukalla" in the Hadramaut since .; The territory of the "Hadramaut" was 1963-1967 a part of the British protectorate of South Arabia. (The British was since 1888 there the protectorate lords.); Sultan Ghalib II was head of state there since and official coroned on .; He was forced to abdication and deposed by an putsch of communist rebels on the which is seen also as the end of the monarchy in Yemen.; This stamps was issued but firstly on and shows the picture of Sultan Ghalib II, what speaks volumes.; This stamp was postmarked by CTO.
