Description

Airmail stamp of the United Arab Emirates – Emirate Fujeira (other spellingː "Fujairah"); 1972; commemorative stamp to the issue "Children’s Day 1972 – Paintings" (The Arab Children’s Day 1972 = ); The depicted stamp is UAE-FU Michel No. 861A ("B" = imperforate) from 1972 and shows as stamp motive a reproduction of the painting "The pink boy" by Thomas Gainborough (1727-1788).; Gainsborough has created this painting in 1782 and depicted a Frank Nicholls in 1782 in a pink silk costume of the Renaissance time after the paragon of the Flemish Baroque painter Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) which was also to his time court painter at King Charles I of England (1599-1649).; Gainsborough was a great admirer of van Dyck and had often painted portraits of people in similar costumes, which Gainsborough had seen at van Dyck.; Frank Nicholls (born 1774) was the grandson of a then very prominent English anatom.; Gainsborough has painted "The pink boy" (other title: "Master Nicholls") in 1782.; The artist has painted this picture similar to his more famous painting "The blue boy" which is a portrait of Jonathan Buttal.; Gainsborough has exhibited itself this painting at the "Royal Academy Exhibition" of 1782.; The original painting is contemporary located in Waddesdone Manor, Ayesbury (county Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom) and was originally purchased by Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839-1898) on from a man with name Agnews for 5,512 ₤ + 10 s.; This painting is since then possession of the Rothschild family.; Unfortunately this stamp was postmarked by CTO.
Note:
The Emirate "Fujeira" was 1892-1971 British and one of the so-called "Trucial States" in Southeast Arabia. This emirate published own stamps in 1964-1972, however the most of his stamps were "...gaudy topical stamps for sale to collectors". The depicted stamp in one of these.
