Original Caption: "Stanislaus County, San Joaquin, California. Labor contractor's camp for field labor during the pea harvests of California, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. Many of these families move with him from state to state at their own expense. 477 adult pickers in this camp, all openings filled three days after work started. Season here lasts about one month. Toilets provided, no tent platforms, no showers, all water hauled from well. Note crowding. In order to get work under the contractor's system pea pickers must live in camps provided by the contractor. He employs no local labor."
