Description
English: Star is the name of a succession of reindeer which have occupied the fenced-in pen, seen at left, at the corner of Tenth Avenue and I Street in the South Addition neighborhood of Anchorage, Alaska for many decades, perhaps a half century or longer. Beyond the photo's left edge is the longtime home of Ivan and Oro Stewart, both deceased. In 1942, the Stewarts established a photographic equipment and supply store on Fourth Avenue in the heart of downtown Anchorage's commercial district, which has remained in business despite the shift in the marketplace from local to regional and national retailers throughout the latter half of the 20th century. At first, the reindeer could often be found at the store, with the Stewarts using it in their advertising and encouraging visitors to have their photo taken with it. In more recent times, it has largely resided in their side yard adjacent to I Street. The fence was completely enclosed after one of the reindeer died (either from choking or suffocation, I don't remember exactly) when vandals threw trash over the fence (again I don't remember exactly, but I believe that particular Star fell victim to a plastic shopping bag).
