Three Lockheed F-104 Starfighters streak past the crowd at the 2008 Joint Services Open House airshow at Andrews AFB.

As a kid I had made a model of a F-104. I thought that the Starfighter was a sleek and powerful looking plane with short razor like wings and a fuselage built tightly around its powerful engine. I had also seen this Cold War plane in the Air & Space museum, but I had never seen them flying. I do believe that the announcers mentioned that these might be the only 3 flying F-104s left. The plane closest to you is a two seater version of the Starfighter.

I've come to learn from the Starfighters web site that their aircraft were purchased from the Canadian Air Force. I can only imagine the expense involved in operating and maintaining these planes.
