English: Tipplers : an image of a painting by Robert Rayment, 1889
The original painting of Tipplers is held by the John Oxley Library. It was painted by Robert Saunder Rayment (1839 - 1893). Watercolour over pencil measuring 37 x 33 cm. Henry Tippler was a member of one of the well-known oyster families who could be found at Currigee on South Stradbroke Island at the end of the nineteenth century. He is listed in the Queensland Post Office Directory 1896/97, 1901 and 1902. Along with men by the name of Lucas, Griffin, Hurley and Clark, he held leases issued by the government to collect, preserve, fatten and sell oysters of every description. Currigee was a variation in the spelling of kurrajong. It was the main base for the oyster industry, which reached a peak around the turn of the century. In the early 1900s Stradbroke Island broke in two and the oyster farms at Currigee went into decline. The Moreton Bay Oyster Company, which was formed in 1876, was a pioneer at Currigee, applying for land there in 1881. It was a lucrative living for those who took part, but there were occasional problems such as sponges, starfish and a fish called the oyster eater, which raided the beds at high tide during several months of the year.
