Description
English: North Australian Lodge, Brisbane, ca. 1873

Brisbane's first School of Arts building on the corner of Queen and Creek Streets, arranged for a Masonic ceremony in the early 1870s.

This venue was probably used temporarily by the North Australian Lodge, when a new meeting place had to be found in 1872. The brethren left the Old Masonic Hall and later moved to the Town Hall, which became their new quarters. The North Australian Lodge was the first established in the colony and derived its name from the hotel in Queen Street where its earliest meetings took place. John Petrie, Sir Charles Lilley and Ratcliffe Pring were original members of this distinguished group of freemasons. (Description supplied with photograph.).
