English: Lewis Perkins with his wife and sons in front of their home, Stanthorpe, ca. 1874
The Perkins family settled in their home on the corner of Folkstone and Granite Streets, Stanthorpe in 1874. Lewis Perkins was involved in the first fatal accident at a tin mine in the Sugarloaf area in 1874. The death was reported in the Border Post and the Stannum Miner and reports varied on which mine he died at. One said he was killed in the field at the Brisbane Claim at Sugarloaf and the other reported he was on the Wheal-Edith Mining Company site. After his death there was a public subscription set up to help his wife and seven children. (Description supplied with photograph). |
