Description
English: Unidentified man and Herbert Kenny under the Dig Tree, 1887 This tree is actually the one Burke was buried under by William Howitt. The photo was taken by E. Spiller (Gov. Photographer) in 1887. The figure on the right is Herbert Kenny, manager of Innamincka Station at the time. An identical photo with this information is in the LaTrobe Library collection in Melbourne. The lower blaze 'R.O.H.B.' was made by Howitt, and has been enhanced with ink on the negative. The upper blaze, with McKinlay's initials 'MK' has also been enhanced, but incorrectly. McKinlay did not engrave 'D.I.G' on this tree. Herbert Kenny erected the fence around 1860. He was the father of B.R. Devine of East Warrick and grandfather of Beryl Hope Cust, wife of Arthur Cust. Mr. Kenny later owned Koreelah Station over the border in NSW (Description supplied with photograph.).
