English: All that is left of the Victoria Bridge after floods washed a section away, Brisbane, 1893.
On the morning of Monday 6 February 1893, the northern half of the Victoria Bridge collapsed under the rush of floodwaters and accumulated debris. Work commenced on the bridge in 1866 and it was opened in 1874. A new Victoria Bridge was erected in 1896-1897. (Description supplied with photograph.). A crowd is gathered on the city side of the river to inspect the damaged bridge. The Brisbane River is in full flood and many buildings on the south side are under water. A sailing ship is moored at the wharf at South Brisbane. |
