English: John & Mary Nicholson in front of their Grovely property, Brisbane 1866.
The Nicholsons arrived in Brisbane on the Essex in August 1864. They took up land to the west of Brisbane and built this house. The photograph is annotated, probably by Mary. She writes, 'J&M sitting on the verandah - A (Arthur) on the form behind - obliged to be in that peculiar position to get us all in one focus - they are opposite the middle window of the sitting room facing the road in view.' To the left of the photograph are the remarks, 'John's ship stool' and 'My work basket' on the right. (Information taken from the Nicholson Family Album, APA-59). |
