Description

Was trying to get to Broad Street without going through Chamberlain Square and Paradise Forum, but Fletchers Walk was closed (was a Sunday), so went via the garden opposite the Town Hall, and ended up going up the spiral staircase, though Chamberlain Square and into Paradise Forum.

I think you can shortcut through Fletchers Walk between Monday to Saturday.

The back of the James Watt statue in Chamberlain Square with the Chamberlain Memorial.

The James Watt statue is by Alexander Munro, 1868, hand resting on a steam-engine cylinder.

Above information from Pevsner - Birmingham.

The statue of James Watt was originally located on Paradise Street next to the Town Hall.

The Chamberlain Memorial was erected in Chamberlain Square in October 1880, in the presence of Joseph Chamberlain, who was the Mayor of Birmingham. He also was a Member of Parliament, a businessman, a councillor and mayor.

The monument was designed by Henry John Chamberlain (no relation to Joseph Chamberlain). It is Grade II listed.

1880, by J H Chamberlain. In a Gothic style. Four gabled faces with arches filled with diaper and mosaic work and a portrait medallion of Chamberlain by Thomas Woolner. Corner pinnacles and a crocketted spire with lucarnes and an iron finial. The basin at the foot a modern replacement.
